Damiana is a popular aphrodisiac for men. It enhances blood flow to the genitals and for some; it gives a sense of euphoria. It is also used to enhance orgasms in women and used for asthma, depression, digestive problems, and menstrual disorders. It is used in diet aids to increase metabolic rate.

Damiana is the first herb people turn to when they require something to give them a little bit of a boost in the bedroom. This benefit extends to both men and women. It’s no surprise that many herbal formulations feature this little plant. It works well in many forms such as teas and capsules, in some places of the world it’s even used as a brewing herb for popular drinks like triple sec.

Latin Name:
Turnera diffusa

Common Names:
Herba de la Pastora, Mexican Damiana, Mizibcoc, Old Woman’s Broom, Rosemary, Turnerae diffusae folium, Turnerae diffusae herba, Turnera microphyllia.

Parts Used:
Leaf and leaf stems, dried.

Properties:
Mild purgative, diuretic, tonic

Traditional Uses:
Tea, compounded into an elixir, or as a capsule or extract form

Culinary Uses:
Not used in cooking.

Chemical Properties:
cineole, p-cymene, alpha- and beta-pinene, thymol, alpha-copaene, and calamene among other chemicals.

Cautions:
GRAS: Generally Recognized As Safe. This herb can be safely consumed when used appropriately. According to some sources, Damiana has the potential to lower blood sugar levels. Because a traditional use of Damiana is as an abortive, it should also be avoided during pregnancy.
