Ayurvedic Bulk Herbs – Bala

The name “bala” is Sanskrit for “strength”—and the energy and physical characteristics of the plant hold true to its name. The stem and roots of this small shrubby perennial are tough, helping it grow in a variety of conditions across Sri Lanka and India.

Bala is a member of the mallow family (Malavaceae), a family of flowering plants that also includes hollyhocks, okra, and cotton. It has long been used in Ayurvedic herbalism for external preparations and as an ingredient in massage oils, including Ashwagandha Bala Oil, a traditional herbal oil that is a favorite among all age groups and is traditionally used in massage for infants and children.
