Chinese Bulk Herbs – Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong)

Du Zhong, also known as Eucommia bark is used to prevent miscarriages and heal tissues that are slow to mend. It helps treat lower back and leg pain, as well as stiffness, arthritis and knee problems. Studies are being done to see if the diuretic properties will aid in reducing swelling. It not normally used by itself but with other healing herbs that support its function.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Nourishes the Liver and Kidney, strengthens the bones and muscles, and prevents miscarriage.

Eucommia ulmoides

Chinese Name:
Du Zhong

Common Names:
Eucuommia, rubber tree

Parts Used:
Bark

Properties:
Sweet in flavor, warm in property, acts on the Liver and Kidney channels.

Folk-Lore:
“In 2000, researchers at Nihon University in Chiba, Japan, published two studies showing that both the leaves and the bark of Eucommia ulmoides contained a compound that encourages the development of collagen in rats. Collagen is an important part of connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments. However, they found that the compound was present in much greater quantities in fresh leaves and fresh bark and that much of it was destroyed during the drying process. “Herbal Remedies”
