Copal, in a general sense, refers to the dried resin that is secreted by a variety of trees hailing from tropical climates. Traditionally, tree resins are This resin has been used since antiquity and many indigenous tribes use the resins in their ceremonies. Our copal oro resin comes from Shorea javanica.
Copal refers to resins from various tress that are in the intermediate stage of polymerization. This means that the resin is between the gummy stage and the hard amber stage. The Nahuatl tribe referred to this as ‘copalli’ which, in a modern sense means “incense”. These resins have been used by ancient tribes such as the Aztec and Maya in many ritualistic ceremonies as an offering or along with other offerings. Indigenous people of the Central America and Mexico region still make use of it in modern sweat lodges and sacred mushroom ceremonies. much like how it’s used in the modern world, they would place the resin on hot coals for spiritual cleansing.
