Chinese Bulk Herbs – Anemarrhena (Zhi Mu)

Anemarrhena or Zhi Mu as it is called in China is used for fevers, chronic bronchitis, excessive sweating, coughs, dizziness, lumbago, and pneumonia. It’s extremely effective for treating oral ulcers. Zhi Mu is very good at generating fluids and moistening dryness.

It contains asphonin which is used to treat lower back pain and it relaxes tension. It is known in China to purge heat and nurtures Yin. It has been used in China for centuries where its recorded history can be dated back to 200 BC.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Clears away pathogenic Heat and Fire, replenishes Yin, promotes the production of Fluid, and alleviates Dryness. In Chinese medicine, anemarrhena purges heat, nurtures yin and relaxes tension. It is sometimes mixed with other herbs, such as phellodendron, scrophularia and Chinese foxglove.

Parts Used:
The dried rhizome.

Properties:
Anemarrhena is bitter and sweet in flavor, cold in property, acts on the lung, stomach, and the kidneys.

Cautions:
Anemarrhena should not be used by people that have diarrhea or spleen deficiency. It’s been reported that large doses can be toxic and may inhibit heart action. Excess amounts may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure.
