Chinese Bulk Herbs – Chinese Motherwort (Yi Mu Cao)

Chinese motherwort is used in formulas that deal with blood in the urine or an onset of edema (redness of the skin). It’s also been used for high blood pressure, irregular menstruation with cramps and clotting. The Chinese also use it for eczema and preservation of placenta.

Chinese motherwort is different from the western motherwort, which we also carry.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Invigorates blood and regulates menstruation, invigorates blood and reduces clotting.

Latin Name:
Leonurus heterophyllus
Leonurus japonicus

Chinese Name:
Yi Mu Cao

Common Names:
Chinese Motherwort, oriental motherwort

Parts Used:
Aerial portion

Properties:
Slightly cold, acrid, bitter taste.

Cautions:
Do not use during pregnancy or where Yin is deficient.
