Western Bulk Herbs – Goldenrod

Goldenrod improving urinary tract function and aiding in sore throats and respiratory conditions. It’s also been used for hundreds of years to help stop bleeding. It’s also been used to help pass kidney stones.

Latin Name:
Solidago virgaurea

Common Names:
Julia’s goldenrod, Canadian Goldenrod, and Wound Wort

Parts Used:
The above-ground parts of the plant, ground and chopped.

Properties:
Aromatic, stimulant, carminative.

Traditional Uses:
Traditionally used as a tea, available in tea bags. Should drink between meal.

Culinary Uses:
Not used in cooking.

Chemical Properties:
Flavonoids, including kaempferol, rhamnetin, quercetin, quercitrin, astragalin, and afzetin; also, saponins, essential oil, germacrene, pinene, limonene, hydoxycinnamic acid, caffeic acid, and tannins.

Cautions:
Do not use Goldenrod if you have a history of chronic kidney disorders or kidney disease. Do not use if there is edema from heart failure or kidney insufficiency.

Folk Lore:
“The traditional use of goldenrod was to treat kidney stones. Grieve’s Modern Herbal notes that in 1788 a boy of ten, after taking the infusion for some months, passed quantities of gravel, fifteen large stones weighing up to 40 grams (1-1/4 ounce), and fifty over the size of a pea. The flavonoids and saponins in the herb help relieve inflammation throughout the urinary tract while acting as a mild diuretic.” (Grieve’s Modern Herbal)
