Chinese Bulk Herbs – Platycodon (Jie Geng)

When used in herbal and wholistic remedies, Platycodon Root also known as Jie Geng, expels pus from abscesses in lungs or throat as well as the larynx.
This herb is also known as balloon flower due to the way the flowers look like bells or balloons.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Circulates Lung Qi and expels Phlegm; promotes Yin; promotes discharge of pus, benefits throat, directs the effect to other herbs upward; tonifies and sedates.

Platycodum grandiflorum

Jie Geng

Platycodon, Balloon flower root, Chinese bellflower

Root

Properties:
Bitter, acrid.

Cautions:
Do not use in large quantities as it will cause vomiting and nausea.
