Chinese Bulk Herbs – Rhubarb (Da Huang)

Rhubarb or Da Huang has always been used for the treatment of high fevers, excessive sweating, thirst, and constipation. It has also been used for bloating, pain, jaundice, high blood pressure, and hemorrhages. The root has used for female problems such as no menstruation, and immobile abdominal masses. It can be used on hot, swollen painful eyes and to treat skin burns, worms, edema, and delirium.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Drains heat and moves stool; drains damp heat; drains excess heat from the bold.

Rheum palmatum

Da Huang

Chinese rhubarb, ornamental rhubarb, Turkey rhubarb, East Indian rhubarb

Root and Rhizome

Properties:
Cold, bitter

Cautions:
Use with caution when pregnant and where imbalances in Qi and blood or cold deficient spleen and stomach.
