Chinese Bulk Herbs – Scrophularia (Xuan Shen)

Scrophularia or Xuan Shen is normally used for any type of a sore throat and swollen lymph glands. Most of the time its added to other herbs in a formula to treat conditions of the throat.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Clears pathogenic Heat, quenches Fire, counteracts Toxicity, nourishes Yin.

Latin Name:
Scrophularia ningpoensis

Chinese Name:
Xuan Shen

Common Names:
Chinese figwort, Scrophularia, Ningpo figwort

Parts Used:
Root

Properties:
Bitter, sweet and salty in flavor, cold in property.

Cautions:
Scrophularia should not be used if a person has stomach or spleen problems. It should NOT be added to any combination that contains black hellebore (Li Lu). It shouldn’t be taken if a person has a poor appetite or has diarrhea.
