Chinese Bulk Herbs – Agastache (Huo Xiang)

Agastache is used for anxiety, nausea, bacterial infections, or gas. It’s also used for epigastric distension (pain of the right upper abdomen), anorexia, and vomiting.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Agastache’s pharmaceutical name is Herba Agastachis and is normally combined with other herbs to prepare Bu Huan Jin Zhen Qi San, a health restoring powder.

In Chinese medicine Agastache is used for disturbance of the spleen and stomach. In some, internal organs are impaired from eating cold food during summer months which the Chinese call wind cold. Agastache is used to counteract these conditions. Some of the symptoms are fever, aversion to cold, headaches, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Chinese Name:
Huo Xiang

Common Names:
Korean mint, wrinkled giant hyssop, purple giant hyssop, Indian mint, blue licorice, Chinese patchouli

Parts Used:
The dried aerial part

Properties:
Pungent in flavor, slightly warm in property, acts on the spleen, stomach, and lungs. It’s reported to have antifungal, antibacterial, carminative, and antipyretic properties.

Cautions:
None known at this time.

Folk Lore:
Can be used in salad dressings and meat marinades but it most common use is a tea. It has a strong anise or licorice flavor.
