Chinese Bulk Herbs – Bupleurum (Chai Hu)

Bupleurum works on the liver releasing trapped stagnation. It also works on the uterus and rectum with symptoms of shortness of breath, fatigue, frequent urination, and vaginal discharge. It can be used with other healing herbs such as Yin Chen Hao , Da Huang and Zhi Zi to treat jaundice. It helps clean both the liver and gallbladder.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Chai Hu releases pathogens in the liver when a patient has fevers and chills with a fullness in the chest. It unblocks liver qi stagnations that is associated with moodiness, impatience, dizziness, abdominal bloating, menstrual cramps, amenorrhea, headache, and jaundice. Treats ShaoYang syndrome and ascends Yang Qi

Properties:
Taste Bitter, Acrid Temperature Cool — alterative, analgesic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiperiodic, antipyretic, antiviral, carminative, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, haemolytic, hepatic, pectoral, and sedative.

Cautions:
Yin deficiency causing Liver yang rising. Large doses may cause nausea or vomiting.

Folk Lore:
Chai hu root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. Its name means “kindling of the barbarians” and it balances different organs and energies within the body.
