Chinese Bulk Herbs – Uncaria (Gou Teng)

Uncaria or Gou Teng is used mostly in formulas to treat high blood pressure, headaches, red eyes, irritability, and dizziness. It’s also been shown to help with tumors, seizures, and blood toxicity in pregnant women.

Exinguishes wind and alleviates spasms. For liver heat patterns with internal movement of liver wind, with such symptoms as tremors, seizures, and eclampsia.
Drains liver heat and pacifies liver yang. For liver fire and ascendant liver yang patterns with such symptoms as headache, irritability, red eyes, and dizziness. Recently used for hypertension, especially of this type.
Releases the exterior. For exterior wind-heat patters with such symptoms as fever, headache, and red eyes.

Clinical Use (Chinese):
Extinguishes wind, and alleviates spasms, quells heat and pacifies liver, releases exterior.

Uncaria rhynchophylla

Gou Teng

Common Names:
Gambir, fish hook vine, Cat’s claw herb

Parts Used:
Stems and thorns.

Properties:
Cool, sweet, and works on the liver and heart.
